Opal: I have known a nine-month-old baby diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I
would be interested to learn how a diagnoses was made of a one-week-old.
There seems to be no reason why a baby should not be breastfed. One of my
own diabetic children was breastfeeding when diagnosed at the age of two.
However, because the carbohydrate content of any one feed cannot be
predicted, it may be considered risky when giving insulin to rely on
breastmilk to balance it. These are just thoughts that occur to me when
thinking about this situation. I would like to know a good deal more about
the proposed treatment and care of such a small baby in this situation.
