Subject: The first 24 hours normal newborn behavior

Hi Sheila,

I am very interested in this subject. I have found no research on it. I have worked with newborns in the first 24 hours in both hospital and home births. There is a wide variance of nursing and alert periods of the normal newborn with in both groups. If there is one prevailing behavior, it would be active and vigorous nursing behavior during the first few hours followed by deep sleep for 8-12 hours following this. During the rest period, I have noticed increased mucus secretions and decreased bowel sounds. I would love further input on this subject. Debra Swank are you out there?

Thanks,

Mary Westra, IBCLC
