If anyone has a hospital protocol for when mom is positive for meth
that addresses breastfeeding immediately at birth and you are willing to
share, please email me directly. References for recommendations would
be great. We are seeing more meth positive women who deliver. Some of
the OB nurses found a reference... they did not have the source, that
suggested because the colostrum is so dense the amount of meth would be
greater and infants should not be allowed to nurse and mother and infant
should be separated. I have trouble with this protocol believing that
bonding and breastfeeding may be a positive influence for helping mom
recover especially when she desires to change her behavior. I can
not find the reference now that I read some time ago, suggesting that if
mom had been using in the 3rd trimester, that the small amount of meth
in the breastmilk could help with possible withdrawal symptoms. I have
not found anything recent in the archives or other sources.
Thanks Pam
