Hi everyone

I'm new to this list, and a newly qualified IBCLC (wrote the my first exam
in 2010) although I've been working with moms and babies with regards to
breastfeeding for 15-16 years and love it!

This is interesting to me. Although I do not encourage the use of pacifiers
if at all possible due to many reasons (as you all would know), are you
saying that when mothers use the 'orthodontic' shaped pacifiers as opposed
to the rounder or possibly "cherry" dummies as they're called here, there
are more problems with 'biting' or clamping down on the breast?
Please expand on this? I find it interesting..

Thank you

My thoughts on pacifiers is: if the study does not control for the TYPE of
pacifier used (shape and length) with consistency between the groups, it is
not a valid study. In my experience, many of the babies with breastfeeding
problems are using flat or weirdly shaped pacifiers that encourage biting
and not sucking. It's like comparing bottles and breastfeeding - it all
depends on which mom, which baby, which bottle, etc.
