I'm extremely worried that this person is advocating sleep training at 2 months and find their research questionable. The AAP states that breast and formula fed babies need to eat at night for a minimum of 2 to 4 months. The babies need food to grow! Sleep training aside, these babies need food and I'm very worried we are going to see babies not gaining weight adequately. Where is his research showing that babies won't be harmed from lack of nutrition at this age? Especially breastfed babies whose milk digests more quickly and have smaller more frequent feeds.
I'm also saddened to see this study in Australia used as defense for the idea that it's harmless. This is a 5 year follow up. The original study also was described as proof that sleep training was fine too, even though the original study only looked at how much the parents were bothered by the infant's crying and if the mothers suffered any higher rate of depression. What they found was that over time the mothers were less and less bothered by the crying (they were desensitized to the crying) but the study was touted as proof that sleep training was fine for babies even though the effect on the babies wasn't examined. Now 5 years later they looked to see if there was any sign of emotional problems in the children, but here are some problems, in my opinion with this research.
1. It was very small - 225 children2. It was a survey that was parent reported. It's based on the parents views of their relationship, emotional problems in their children, etc. Parents can be biased in this regard.3. Although they saw no clear harm from the control group, they also saw no clear benefit either. There was no advantage over the control group that did not go through sleep training.4. Separate studies have shown that infants who are raised in a more nurturing environment had changes in the structural anatomy of their brains such as a larger hippocampus as compared to infants in a less nurturing environment.
I would also say that although I'm not at all a fan of sleep training, I do think that at least with this method the child is not completely abandoned, but the parent sits in the room and then does not respond to the child and leaves after the child is asleep. I think it still must be a horrible experience for the baby, but at least their know that their parent isn't just gone forever. My mother said that she was told by her Pediatrician in the 1970's to put my brother down for his nap and then go to the store and do her shopping so she wouldn't be bothered by listening to his cries. Parents have been victims of bad parenting advice for a long time, unfortunately. To counter this argument, I would point out the research done by the Zero to Three project showing how a nurturing environment can improve an infant's cognitive development.

Dear Lactnet Friends:

I'd love to read this article; my local medical library doesn't carry the

Would someone be so kind as to send me a private message about it? <

Abstract

In this column, Sara Wickham takes a sideways look at issues relevant to
midwives, students, women and families, inviting us to sit down with a cup
of tea and ponder what we think we know. A recent paper on apparent
life-threatening events (ALTEs) in newborn babies brought to mind an
experience from practice, the cause of which remains a mystery. As many
similar events are unexplained, is it acceptable that there is a tendency
in the literature to claim that skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding are
risk factors for ALTEs?

WSJ has an article today about sleep training. I think they just look for a
controversial topic to get readers riled.

The man featured in this article works very hard on his mission, here in New York, sadly. While I concur the press gin up stories to attempt to maximize readership, it would not surprise me if getting this much front page ink had the fingerprints of a well-paid publicist.

Thank you, Dawn....I like teh LATCH documentation because it seems simple
enough and like the Apgar which they are already familiar with.We use
Meditech for EMR and I am working with our documentation staff to get it
put into the Meditech system.
Thank you again.
