This is as old as the hills, a ploy by the formula companies to get in to
the hospital and be seen as credible by those professionals who then will
go and do their advertisement for them, most of the time, unknowingly.
Nurses need to understand that getting education costs money, and if it is
"free," someone pays for it. In this case, it is the moms and babies, who
pay through the nose but don't realize it.

Companies that sell artificial baby milk have no business selling
education. They are actually selling propoganda. Refer to the WHO Code and
the ethical guidelines set forth by the ILCA. If the trade off is that
your unit uses their "product," in trade for training the nurses who will
then be unknowing "shills" for the formula company, because after all, if
you walk in with a product in your hand, even if the situation calls for it
medically, you are endorsing that product by offering it, and using it,...
My name and reputation are attached to that bottle of formula, and lends
considerable credibility to a third rate product.

So, what I am saying is that the company forfeited a talk with you because
they knew you knew the real reason for their interest. Others in management
are offered free "education," for staff, and other freebies, and perhaps
cash offers, or trips, or weekends away for residents (in Vermont, fully
paid ski weekends for residents and their wives were provided when I was
working pediatrics). The mothers and babies who end up using formula
because breastfeeding is not well supported are the ones who pay with their
health. The incidence of cancers, leukemias, Crohns, asthma, etc, are much
higher in artificially fed infants, not to mention that mothers who do not
breastfeed have much higher incidence of some cancers, and other serious
illnesses.

it's a high stakes game and they are banking on those who think it's free,
want the free "candy" of "education," support for residents, etc, help with
building new units, etc, and are then sucked in enough that they have to
be willing to turn their heads and ignore the real price that is paid on a
daily basis. Sicker moms and sicker babies, and professionals that have
been sold down the river as shills.
