Cathy Loughman asks for good ideas on how to handle a situation like this.
The funny part is that her question comes at the conclusion of her own post
describing an exemplary way of doing so. Cathy reacted immediately, went
directly to the person responsible for a questionable clinical decision,
educated the person fearlessly, and dealt with the person's concerns that
led to the decision to isolate the mother from the baby. She saw to it that
the parents and the clinician got the same, good information, and she
reminded the clinician of the educational function of the lactation
consultant in the setting.

Not only that, her actions led to the decision being changed, so the
breastfeeding was not harmed. In other words, her tactics worked.
Excellent!

Cathy, if you are looking for ideas on how to handle such situations without
a huge outpouring of adrenaline and resultant butterflies in stomach, shaky
voice, and general feeling of nervousness for the rest of the shift if not
the rest of the week, I can't help you much beyond reminding you to center
your thoughts, remember to breathe well, and in future remind yourself of
how well it worked this time. But as for how to proceed in the situation,
none of us has anything on you. Congratulate yourself, and steel yourself
for the next encounter.
