There is not any current data available on the amount of Lunesta in breast
milk.
The peak plasma concentration for Lunesta occurs in 1 to 1 1/2 hours. The
half-life of Lunesta is six hours, meaining that is is essentially
eliminated from plasma in about 12 hours. It is weakly bound to plasma
protein, so plasma levels should be close to milk levels.
The mother could breastfeed based on this data, avoid breastfeeding for 3 or
more hours after taking the drug, and monitor the infant for excessive
drowsiness.
She could also wait about ten to twelve hours after taking the Lunesta to
breastfeed. In this case, there should be very little of the Lunesta in the
breast milk. She could try a safer drug with more breastfeeding
informaition to help her sleep. She could also try warm milk (trytophan in
milk) or possibly melatonin (1mg-3 mg) to help her sleep.
Hopefully, these provide enough alternatives to make a decision on how to
proceed.
