This is a bit off topic but can be related to breastfeeding. A newborn I saw
last week in the home was put in an infant swing following breastfeeding when
asleep. Besides the fact that it would have been better for baby to remain
in mom's arms, I was concerned with the speed of the swing, rocking baby
rapidly in head-to-toe direction which intermittently caused baby to startle. I
don't, first of all, see this as a normal physiologic environment for a baby
but also wonder what effect this kind of motion and noise (a rather loud
swhooshing noise accompanied the swing's motion) might have on infant's neurological
system.
To relate to breastfeeding, I would guess that continual use of such a devise
for sleep could interfere with baby's sleep pattern and maybe alter arousal
to feed. Baby was also in this devise before feed and he'd seem about to wake
and then go back to sleep; also had a frown on his face-sign of stress) Any
thoughts/opinions on this?

I think there are often infant care issues that come up, especially with home
visits, and like to be able to address them knowledgeably rather than
emotionally or judgmentally. For example, a new mom recently only dressed her baby
in a onsie (t-shirt) and so I gently pointed out that her baby was cold without
more covering as evidenced by his mottled skin. She took this without an
offense or feelings of "new mother" ineptness, just a new bit of information. So
if I can say to moms that swing use may interfere with feeding cues or create
too much stimulus, I'd like to be able to say this with some backing.
