I, too, have seen some mothers who are giving formula
to a very young infant and saving the pumped milk for later.
I have counseled them that the breastmilk/breastfeeding is
more important to the young infant than it would be for the
older infant. (Hard to even type that as we know it is important
for all ages, and having bf a much older child myself!).

My rationale is knowing the higher risks of a very young infant
having sepsis, RSV, etc and the fact that older infants, greater
than approx 6 months, can be eating other foods and putting
all manner of things into their mouths.

I do see the reasoning of a mother who has weaned an infant,
say, at 9 months old, who has some remaining stash of pumped milk,
and the baby is in daycare. Perhaps she would ration out this milk into
a daily or twice-weekly dose for ???many months? But she would have
to have a large amount of milk in the freezer, and would it be better to
just feed baby exclusive ebm for another month?
Not sure which is better for the baby.
