Jackie Randolph writes "A double electric hospital grade pump is a
must,...Getting baby way up on an Avent with wide open mouth for Supl. will
also help" I do not want to flame Jackie, but we must all realize that
what works for one person may not be standard of care or standard of
practice for everyone. In many places in this world a "a double electric
hospital grade pump" may not be available, acceptable, or affordable for
the mother. Even in the US there are many areas where pumps are difficult
to get and quite costly. Also, there is no artificial nipple that is a
panacea for breastfeeding babies. It is usually best to avoid all
artificial nipples if possible and IF one is chosen to help the mom
identify one which works for her in her situation. This mom could also hand
express or use a manual pump to maintain supply and cup feed the baby.
Other low-tech, high-touch interventions such as breast massage, extended
skin-to-skin contact, co-sleeping and co-bathing may also help this baby
transition to the breast. Cathy Liles
