Let me be the devil's advocate here, when I heard this study at ILCA
Atlanta I was excited at how much sense it made except that I remember that
when my 2 girls were colicky and uncomfortable "antsy" as I called them
they ALWAYS wanted to nurse , for comfort I assumed so I never with-held
or spaced the feeds.
All 3 kids were above 95% even my cyanotic (cardiac) Timmy who needed to
grow for his open heart surgery (while suffering from reflux). They all
consumed "vast quantities of mom's milk (but for about 3 months could be
described as miserable fussy BIG babies). Looking back now with what I
know I might have had a touch of over-abundant milk supply. Who knows ???
But did this study discuss the feeding temperament of these babies who
"consumed greater amounts of milk" were their moms just un-restrictive in
response to their "fussiness" and did alot of nursing for comfort. Which I
can vouch for IS NUTRITIVE, only a non-lactating breast has no milk coming
from it when sucked. I might mention that I did not go onto PRISON DIETS
while I nursed. I love ethnic foods and ate ANYTHING that didn't
move,(especially garlic) from any continent. I refused to be a martyr ! IMO
we wouldn't be here if Bf meant restrictive dietary management ! it doesn't
make any sense, what about indigenous peoples with very narrow diets as
determined by season, famine or latitude.....? What I'm asking, is the
issue of garlic as a fussy or non-fussy inducing food being specifically
addressed in the study ?
p.s. My first daughter the most colicky, most miserable baby
turned out to have bovine sensitivity and lactose intolerance, I quit
drinking milk etc. when we got to 6 months with narey a wink of sleep and I
have avoided it ever since (13 yrs ago). I used to have the dairy deliver 2
gals of milk 2 x weekly to my door when I was SINGLE ! Now with a family of
5, 1 gal of MOO Juice spoils in our fridge by a week. We're close to being
a weaned and BOVINE FRIENDLY FAMILY !
By the way I never suggest that ANY mother routinely avoid ANY food
unless she challenges it again after a 2-3 week abstinence and
re-challenges again at a later date. Aren't all of us subject to having a
"bad-hair day" ? I detest setting a mom up for the feeling it is her milk
or something she's done to deserve a fussy baby ? I never give a "list"
to a mom unless she has a strong atopic family history, with a baby that is
more than "just fussy, or colicky" ie. eczema, sinus congestion, chronic
hot ears or green mucousy, stinky poos.
