I just wanted to mention something that we all I am sure realize, but I was
specifically made aware of it in a personal way. Not everything we read in
the media is correct, or the way it happened, obviously. I am mentioning
this in regards to a few things I have read lately on Lactnet, specifically
about people saying things that seem out of character.
I recently gave two lectures on breastfeeding, one prenatal, and one for
mothers with their babies for the local health insurance company. It went
very well, and encouraged many mothers and gave correct information. About
2 months later. a mother who had just had a baby who unfortunately will
never have a full milk supply due to hormonal reasons told me she is
interested in hearing all about my creative bottle feeding. I gave her a
puzzled look that showed I was clueless. She said, "But I just saw that
article about you!" I had no idea what she was talking about, and she
showed me a national magazine they give out to mothers in the hospital,
with a writeup from the insurance company. It said a reknown lecturer
talks about infant feeding. (No mention that I was a lactation consultant,
IBCLC, what that is, and the topic was Breastfeeding). It said I talked
about creative bottle feeding, what to do when mother's milk is not enough,
and how to deal with colic. Not one mention of Breastfeeding in the entire
article. Someone who picked it up would either think A) I love bottles B)
Breastfeeding is not my specialty C) I do not give support to BF mothers.
This was all without my knowledge, and had the mother not shown it to me, I
would never have seen it!
