Well, gang, I hate to tell you, my "pushiness" about breastfeeding
started before I became an IBCLC. I've been an O.B. nurse for 10 years
and a Childbirth Educator for 7. It is the parent's responsibility to
care for the child they brought into the world. It's my job to help them
make informed choices.
If I'm "pushy" about breastfeeding, I'm just as "pushy" about car seats,
SIDS risks, second hand smoke, finding appropriate child care and child
proofing their homes. Can I help it if the benefits of breastfeeding far
outweigh bottle? I support a mother's decision either way as long as
she knows the disadvantages of both. If she feels "guilty" for choosing
to bottle feed , it's her guilt, not mine. I won't treat her badly if
she doesn't breastfeed.
Sometimes a little "pushiness" is a good thing. These moms are looking
to us for examples. We can't afford to take strong stances on things like
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Shaken Baby Syndrome and then wimp out on the
dangers of formula. Get real: "pushiness"sounds like a formula rep
talking.
