Hi All,

Jean says:

However, there was one statement made (which I have seen made on some of the literature we also hand out) to the effect that "The more milk you remove, the more milk you will make."
<snip>
Would it not be much less misleading, and more realistic to phrase it: "The more OFTEN milk is removed, the more often the signal is given to the breast to speed up and keep up milk production." Or some such phrasing. This general concept, if properly understood, could be workable for both increasing supply and explaining how this same concept can work to (inadvertenly and/or deliberately) decrease supply.

What do others think?? Am I being too picky here???

Jaye again - Jean I do NOT think you are being picky in the least. IN fact I agree with you 100%. This is a phrase I have personally refused to use for years and when moms parrot it back to me I will rephrase in a similar manner as you suggested. Far too many moms come to me fearful of making too much milk be nursing too much or pumping every now and again to relieve fullness or even to have extra milk on hand. And it frankly sounds like one could theoretically easily produce massive amounts of milk with consistent removal - it just doesn't happen quite that way (all the time - it does with some but not with all). It is frustrating.

So - pick away...please. Because the fact is for many moms today (for a variety of reasons) no matter how much milk they remove they won't make more...their supply is what it is going to be. Period.

Warmly,
Jaye
