Denise commented on my description of how I position babies, saying:

<< The result is still an asymmetrical latch ie much more breast in mouth
where chin is then where top lip is, but the baby is, in my opinion, more
naturally positioned (ie mothers would usually position the baby opposite
the breast rather than below it) and they still maintain that slight
extension at the neck that facilitates rapid swallowing, because the
receding chin firmly against the breast tips the head slightly backward.>>

To clarify, I usually position baby reclining at breast, not straight up. This usually naturally means that when mom holds breast, she lifts slightly to tickle, thus breast is slightly above baby's mouth (we're talking slightly) and when baby opens, mom relaxes breast down and into baby's mouth. I
have just had too many problems with moms bringing baby's straight on and curling the bottom lip under or placing baby too high on the nipple, thus not being able to get a good, deep latch. The asymmetric latch is the best thing since sliced bread, IMO, and this, to me, is the easiest way to
achieve it. I even have moms with hickeys on the top of their areola where baby has gotten too high on the nipple in the first few feedings. I like the method someone suggested of bringing nipple down baby's nose and upper lip, because they often do open wide and tip their head up to get it.
Perfect!

BTW, at the risk of jinxing them, our sister hospital had their BFHI site visit last week and it went very well. They are very hopeful. If they receive the designation, they will be the largest hospital in the country (USA) to do so, as I understand it! Hats off to them. They have worked very
hard!

Marsha, who's pea-green with envy and oh, so happy for them!
