Just commenting on two threads. The one about contamination of breast milk.
If there is so much contamination I would definately look at the pumps, or
more importantly the staff. Don't forget the NICU's where staff members caused
the death of infant by cross contamination, sometimes by wearing artificial
nails! I can't imagine that so many moms are at fault for a problem that has
become commonplace, yet we blame them first.
The other is about mom's on antidepressants during pregnancy. I have a mom
that I follow for bereavement who's 14 day old infant died from coxackie
menigitis last year and just to get her out of the pit and functional she had to
go on paxil and then was able to progress through her grief. In this case it
was a lifesaver. Her OB told her he felt it was safer for her to stay on it
through the pregnacy she is now carrying (27 weeks) then wean off later. She was
breastfeeding her other baby beautifully when she left the hospital though
she's someone bitter against people when she hears that breastfeeding protects
babies, and it didn't protect hers. She knows about withdrawal symptoms and I've
suggested to her that she might want to breastfeed to slowly wean the baby to
try to prevent any unwanted symptoms and the two of them can wean the paxil
together. I am also slightly concerned about attachment and anxiety in this mom
and think it would be good to stay on it through her recovery period at least,
she will have a repeat c-section.
I wished that I'd had the SSRI's available to me after my first son was
born, it was a horrible experience, unexpected csection, and it took me probably
a year before I felt human again. I think maybe we are seeing a lot more
people on them because depression doesn't have the same stigma attached to it that
it did years ago. Sorry this is so long
