Several of the women in my LLLC Group have used coconut oil, and found it to
be very effective (some of them have started using it on kids and husbands
as well, for any rashes, etc., that crop up). When only small amounts are
applied, there's really nothing to wash off.

Dr. Jack Newman, who developed All-Purpose Nipple Ointment (APNO),
recommends that APNO be applied sparingly after every nursing until the pain
is gone. From BAMS "Because the ingredients are absorbed into the mother's
skin, the mother does *not* need to remove it before the next
breastfeeding."

Jan asked about coconut oil. I have these references (from Lactnet) While
not specific regarding use on sore nipples it addresses the causes of
persistent sore nipples ie yeast and bacteria. I checked with the infant
risk center and they said it is safe and like everything else you put on the
nipple should be washed off before feeding the baby. It is also important
you use pure virgin coconut oil.
