My heart aches for this family with so many challenges ahead!
Working in a children's hospital, I deal with many "exclusive pumpers" due
to the severity of their baby's condition. These moms' need "hospital
grade" pumps in order to establish and maintain supply - In my experience,
I've found retail pumps aren't strong enough. In our state, Medicaid will
pay for a rental pump, as long as baby is hospitalized, or there is a true
medical need (such as baby unable to suckle at breast). WIC is also a
great help with providing electric pumps in the case of a "medical need".
There is always hope that this little one will be able to PO feed. In the
meantime, mom can be a vital part of his care - by providing breastmilk. We
recommend double pumping q 2-3 hours (x 15 minutes) to establish supply (or
100 minutes of pumping daily). Once milk supply is well established,
pumping can be less frequent.
I would also recommend lots to STS/kangaroo care. This mom will need lots
of encouragement and support!
