You are absolutely right, Rachel. There is a need for paid LCs, Pro Bono
LCs and those who do both. I do not believe that one harms the practice of
the others or the field of lactation as a whole.

Barbara has a right to earn a living from her training, dedication and hard
work. As do any or all LCs who choose that path. I have NO argument with
that at all (anyone who thinks so needs to re-read my post) I would not
tell an other LC how to practice or who to serve, as I would expect her to
give me the same respect. Barbara is to be commended for her hard work with
the Mom's Place clinic. I hope a large number of women will benefit from
this endeavor.

But, as for the assertion that somehow we help mothers more by "not"
helping them now, I just can't agree. I don't think the system of health
care payment and serving the poor will change anytime in the near future in
the USA and my mothers and babies cannot wait until it does. If my approach
is "scatter gun" then that is what it is. At least SOME mothers get served,
which is better than none. I do what I can when I can.

There is room for all kinds of practices, as long as we all adhere to the
Code of Ethics.

Yesterday, I worked with one Pro Bono client and one paying (the paying
will pay me next week however, when she gets her paycheck, her account is
empty at this time) She refused Pro Bono service (even though it was
offered) as she knew she could afford the help, as long as I could work
with her limitations. People DO want to pay for our services, even if they
know they are able to get the help for no cost or low cost. Most women want
to pay if they can as a source of pride, I have found, especially among the
working poor.

Hard decisions everyday, but the babies and mothers are breastfeeding in
circumstances where they might not otherwise. That is what is most
important.

Thank you all for your heartfelt input and respectful attitudes on this
most important issue.
