Urgent Notification for USLCA Members:

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPPAA) 
mandated that the secretary of health and human services adopt a standard 
unique health identifier for health care providers.  On Jan 23, 2004, the 
secretary published a final rule adopting the national provider identifier as this 
identifier.  there is no cost for obtaining the NPI.

All HIPAA covered health care providers shether individuals or organizations, 
must obtain an NPI forr use on all HIpAA electronic transactions.  which 
include claims, eligibility/claim status inquires and responses, referrals and 
remittance advices.  etc.    you all should be getting this letter.
