Hi all
I find this video very very disturbing. It buys into the very sexualisation
of breasts and breastfeeding that ensures that American women face open
scorn when attempting to breastfeed in public. The music and editing work
together to give the impression that the baby is using the mother for some
kind of exploitative sexual gratification (and that the mother may well be
enjoying it). *We* all know that babies twiddle nipples to encourage let
down reflex BUT Josephine Average sees something not nice here. (I don't
know any mothers who would not be revolted by the suggestion that they
wanted to perform a sex act with their babies.) This video very strongly
reflects the very view of breastfeeding that makes it difficult for women to
breastfeed in public. It articulates the fear of breastfeeding that
inhabits our collective (western, victorian/puritanical)consciousness - the
fear that breastfeeding really is a sex-act. (It could be argued that this
is fathers' fear - that they will lose sexual access to their wives to their
children.) This is nasty and does nothing for the cause.

There is a paper here for a clever feminist commentator ...
