I have The Black Parenting Book. I bought it when it was newly published. The copyright date in it is 1999.

I never did read all the way through it. But, just now I checked out the breastfeeding, sleeping, and racism sections.

It is not very good about breastfeeding: examples, suggests food limitations for the mother, says a baby needs 10 wet and 8-10 BMs a day to indicate getting enough, breast milk good in the refrigerator for 48 hours and freezer for two weeks, seems to advocate weaning between 6 months and one year.

On sleep it offers information by Ferber, Sears, McKenna, and Weissbluth. It gives the pros and cons of each approach, but seems to favor some sort of sleep training after the child is six months old.

The racism section is short (1 1/2 pages), but seems pretty good (at least as far as this white, middle class, woman can tell). There is info about instilling cultural pride and heritage.

All in all, some good and some not-so-good info. I would not specifically recommend it.
