Sam wrote about her concerns over the way breastfeeding is presented in the
nursing school where she is currently a student. It occurred to me that her
post would serve as a perfect letter to the administration of the school and
to the national agency that accredits schools of nursing, because the
attitudes revealed in the way the topic is treated seem to show a startling
disregard for evidence-based practice and for professional ethics.

It also occurred to me that if someone wants to get their degree without
being subject to nasty repercussions, they could perfectly well wait until
after they have their diploma and their confirmation of eligibility to sit
the nursing boards in their hot little hand before sending the letter.
Believe me, I speak from bitter experience here, though the point of
contention was not breastfeeding in my case. I was not patient enough to
wait, and I was so naïve I thought the school would listen to me because I
had all the good arguments on my side. Without help from an attorney I
would not have been able to finish school. I would not wish such a fate on
anyone I care about, though I admit I have met people who I would be
delighted to see suffer the way I did in that situation. Luckily for both
of us I have not had the power to so make that happen, but perhaps I can
prevent it happening to Sam.

Sam, if you weren't there, this issue might never be dealt with. If it gets
dealt with as a result of your having attended the school, that is
infinitely better, even if it means waiting until you yourself are out of
their reach.
