This has also been my experience both clinically and personally. I suspect
that solids are not pleasant for infants who have mild reactions. I always
ensure parents are giving children lots of exposure to foods from 6 months
onward but follow the child's lead, especially where there is a suspicion
of allergy. I am truly concerned if the child is not being given the option
of eating solids. This happens more than I would have thought before I
began asking. It can be due to lack of funds and lack of life skills in
some situations. Parents who do not cook or prepare foods may not be giving
an infant exposure to solids at an appropriate age. Breastfeeding is great
insurance in these cases (imagine if they had been formula fed!) but it is
a different situation from a child who resists solids despite lots of
opportunity to eat them.
