We have had a few lactation interns. One had taken the Georgetown
course, one was a nurse from outside the US who wasn't looking to
become an RN here and was interested in lactation (she eventually
became IBCLC and now is part of our department), one who was an
IBCLC candidate who needed some hours and wanted to take advantage
of the 500 for 100 option, the last was a private practice LC who
simply wanted to observe to get a feel of what was happening at the
hospital level. The first three did see patienes after a period of
observing. They were always under the supervision of an IBCLC.
(One time it worked out great as I was quite ill and the other LC at
the time was unavailable. The intern saw all the patients while I
stayed in the office and even snoozed in the lounge chair we used
for consults. That way I didn't have to have patient contact, but
was there to "supervise" and be available for her with any questions
or concerns.) All of these had to show that they had been TB tested
and I think they had to show some immuniazation records (it was a
while back, so I can't be sure). They had to do a mini-orientation
which only took a couple hours. It covered privacy, fire safety and
a couple other basic items. At that time we did not have to ask
permission of patients, although in the early stages when they were
following us around, we certainly introduced them and why they were
with us when we introduced ourselves to each patient.
I have always wanted to develop this into a regular program offering
everythiing from simple observation to a formal intern program, but
the higher-ups put this near the bottom of our list of plans (just
above becoming Baby-Friendly).
