One more thing (only one??)

The expert work group convened by the federal government to study the
feasibility of BFHI in the US met three times between June, 1993 & May, 1994.
The final recommendation of the EWG was presented to the Federal government
(which was NOT endorsed by a number of the participants, by the way,
including LLL & ILCA) in July, 1994. Among a watering down of the Global
Baby Friendly and the 10 Steps, they recommended calling it the Breastfeeding
Health Initiative (BfHI) as "Baby Friendly" was too un-pc.

So, you may ask, what has happened to the U.S. BfHI? that's just what I
asked, and the answer is, "absolutely nothing." the recommendations went to
the federal government, and that, my dears, is that. I asked Lori Cooper of
Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies who was at the helm of the EWG if anyone had
written an article abuot BfHI that would go out to all the hospitals so the
administrators would know how to at least begin to support bf. Nope,
nothing. Let's face it, BfHI isn't the Gold Standard as is BFHI, but it at
least is more supportive of bf than nothing. But nothing is where we are at.

And that, my friends, is $365,000 of your taxpayer dollars at work.

Jan Barger, who REALLY must get off lactnet today and say hi to my fam....
