<There is some new research that has examined prolactin secretion in
obese
women. Below is a quote from a paper of mine and the citation that
concerns
prolactin (it is just an abstract but the full paper may have been
published
by now). . . . .Obesity, which is common in the west, is
also associated with increased oestrogen secretion (Bianchini, Kaaks &
Vainio 2002) and since oestrogen is a lactation suppressant this may
affect
milk production (Koetsawang 1987).">

Thanks, Karleen for the interesting new (to me) information. Be sure to
tell us more about where your article will appear when you can. If I
didn't make it clear in my original post, the gist of my question had to
do with progesterone, and whether (as the article/reference seemed to
indicate) adipose tissue can actually secrete progesterone. I thought it
only stored it, and probably released it only as the plasma level began
to fall after the delivery of the full placenta. Isn't the delayed fall
in the progesterone level the explanation for the effects of retained
placental fragments? I had figured that only the placenta and the ovary
were capable of actually secreting it.
