Dear Jan, I agree with the need to assess stools in the early days and
weeks in order to get an accurate picture of adequacy of intake. I think
the combination, # stool & # wet, needs to be considered. I've heard
people state so glibly that BF babies don't stool as often - at one week
of age and frankly the baby is doing awful when you get a good look at it.
Nothing like a complete eval of # of wet and dirty and seeing a BF in
person to help sort it all out. There is only so much you can do over
the phone and if I HEAR *ANY* red flags then I want to SEE mom and baby. I
consider poor stooling as much a red flag as poor urine output.

On another bent - moms with numerous children sometimes have problems
because of sheer busyness and not paying close attention to the newborn's
needs. It's all old hat to them and they just don't give BF the careful
attention they gave with baby #1 or #2. I also think that sometimes
"older" moms, over 40-something, have supply problems, but I really haven't
any data on this, just observations. Anyone else see this? Sincerely, Pat
in SNJ
