Dear Friends:

Phyllis tells of high-level NICU nurses saying that paced bottle-feeding
"takes too long." I got into a heated discussion with a nurse (who is also
a naturopath!) about hand expression when I expressed my concern about a baby
born to a diabetic mother being supplemented with formula, and now having 2
risk factors for developing diabetes instead of just one. Again, the
complaint was "I don't have time for that."
The factory approach in maternity strikes again. "Efficiency" is deemed
more valuable than health. Never mind that a rushed baby shuts down (thank
you Dr. Bergman) and will not cooperate. I wonder how many babies in NICU are
in unstable condition because they are missing their mothers?
Humans fight time in maternity. Nurses tell me that mothers and babies
can stay together for 2 hours after delivery sometimes, unless the unit is
busy and the labor bed has to be emptied. I've had mothers tell me that their
nursing baby was taken off the breast, because that bed had to be emptied.
I recall Thich Nat Hanh saying that our end destination is death, so why
the hurry?
Hospitals have never been good places, ever.
Skin to skin can turn things around for mothering and for
breastfeeding.........trying to stay optimistic!
    warmly,
