I've been meaning to write this mini-update,but haven't gotten around until
now.

(mom of 10, had a thyroidectomy after baby 6, had previously successfully
nursed 6 babies with no complications. After surgery - babies 7, 8, and 9 had
weight gain issues and required supplementation.)

Baby #10, Girl, Liberty - was born july 3. Mom walked onto the L&D floor and
delivered before they were able to get her admitted! Delivery went well. She
latched well and nursed well during her first 24 hours.

Things kind of went downhill after that and excuse for my lack of details as I
forgot to write it all down at the hospital today.

Her bilirubin went up to 20 I believe. She was readmitted for phototherapy at
least once, maybe twice. Her bili hovered around 18 last week and she was
losing weight despite nursing and supplementation with EBM and donated EBM
(story at the end).

LC at the hospital did a pre and post feed weight and Liberty only took in
1/10th of an ounce... She was extremely sleepy as a result of the jaundice.
Mom said even when she was offered a bottle it took an hour for her to finish
it.

They came in today and the bili level was down to 14! So this is where we'll
start. Mom is supposed to come back next Wednesday for a weight check and
we're hoping she'll show up and be proficient about tracking the weight gain.

Mom has a very supportive doctor for herself and will be hopefully having her
thyroid levels tested soon (including T3 levels) to see if this could be
impacting her milk.

Because of the prolonged jaundice issue, not much improvement has been
made in the weight gain issue. now that things are looking better we can
start addressing how to get the baby to gain weight.

Mom has told us that a friend of hers had a baby who passed away at 2
months of age after a genetic disorder or birth defect of some sort (wasn't
told what it was). The mom of the baby who passed away had a substantial
amount of EBM in her freezer and has given it to baby liberty's mom to use in
supplementation. This made me feel warm all over for many reasons. That a
mom would do this for another mother's child (and not consider it weird as
many would) - and that she would do this in the middle of her grief... it's a
beautiful thing.

so i believe at this point Liberty has not been supplemented with anything
other than breastmilk.

that's all i have for now, not much really.

I'll be on the floor next week when she's supposed to come in for a weight
check, so i'll update then.

oh and mom had baby in a sling - she said she's a strong believer in them, so
that made me happy too!
