I have a question that I have been mulling over, hope it's
not a silly one. Saw a mom in our clinic yesterday, eight
days post-partum. Babe has regained her birthweight.
Mom has had ongoing issues with uncomfortable breast
fullness, and nipple trauma. Yesterday's app't was able to
correct position and latch. Left breast was finally softer and
more comfortable, nipple pretty much healed. The right breast
was softer after feeding and pumping, but with several lumpy,
tender areas especially in the upper, outer aspect of the breast.
Mom has tried everything to get these moving, but despite the babe
feeding, pumping(with a hospital grade electric pump), warm
compresses, ice packs, gentle massage, warm water soaks,
and different feeding postions, the areas have persisted. My
question is, the fact that the nipple on this breast is still quite
damaged,
(though surprisingly not too uncomfortable to nurse), with significant
amount of scabbing present, are these scabs preventing drainage of
certain areas of the breast? (Much like a nipple bleb would?)
Will this mom have to wait for these scabs to come off before
she can effectively empty her breasts? TIA, Doreen Vanderstoep RN,
IBCLC
