I got a call from a woman near St. Stephen's New Brunswick, Canada, who is
using an electric double pump and bottle feeding EBM with the Haberman to
her 2 month old baby boy who has a unilateral cleft lip and palate, though
the palate cleft is "not that big". Today it was suggested that she
supplement with formula because the "baby wasn't gaining enough". Mom is
pumping about 60 mls every 2 hours during the day, and not so much at night
for a total of approx 750 mls a day. Birth weight was 8 lbs,9oz, and the
lowest weight was 7 lbs, 1 oz and the baby weighs 11 lbs, 10 oz.now. That
means a gain of 4 lbs,9 oz in 8 weeks, and that seems okay with me!
(works out to 9 oz a week). I think the problem was that originally the baby
was gaining more and now is not gaining as much, so it looks like he's not
keeping up. My suggestions were to increase # of pumpings in 24 hours,
shorter and frequent being the ticket, and supplement with her own EBM. But
I'm thinking that even that may not be necessary, because of the total daily
milk pumped seems fine, and the baby is peeing lots, and doesn't seem hungry.
This is a very committed and experienced breastfeeding mom, who would like
to try to get the baby back to the breast. The first surgery is Nov 14th.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help. Either on Lactnet, or direct to me at [log in to unmask]
