Dear Valerie and all,

In defense of Kathy D.'s comment about babies dying - this is looking at
the situation on a population basis, rather than an individual basis.

From a public health perspective, this does make sense without being
heartless and cruel.  The goal is to change the environment to ultimately
protect the health of lots more babies than can be helped with an
individualized approach.  Obviously, the 2 approaches together are needed,
but the balance that must be struck to achieve the larger goals can
sometimes be difficult to identify and obtain.
