I'm sure many if not most of us may be doing this, but I haven't
seen it mentioned in recent posts about getting babies back to the
breast or to the breast initially well after the newborn days.
So often people, especially moms, but in cases also LCs, seem to be
taking the "all or nothing" approach. They try baby at breast and
if baby won't latch, the feeding is done by whatever alternative
method is being used. I try to encourage the mom to only "take the
edge off" baby's hunger with the alternative method, and then try
breast again while baby is still interested in eating, but not so
ravenous as he/she may be at the start of a feed. I often find that
at this point, the baby is more willing to at least make an effort
and begin to make steps toward really getting a feed at breast.
Just my .02 worth.
Winnie
