I would use Lawrence's book and have them read "Money milk and madness", The
WHO code and the Baby friendly initiative. I would cover all the subjects:
breastfeeding benefits and formula risks
feeding costs of breastfeeding vs. formula-feeding
strategies for successfully breastfeeding (attend a breastfeeding class and
watching a breastfeeding video like Medela’s. among other things)
the myths of breastfeeding
maternal diet during breastfeeding
nursing in public
working and breastfeeding
mother-child separation and milk storage
infant sleep safety including co-sleeping and bed sharing
infant slings
feeding problems and solutions (including breast refusal and nursing
supplementers and nipple shields)
sore nipples
hand expression of breastmilk and pumping
risks of indiscriminate use of pacifiers or bottles
breastfeeding developmental milestones in conjunction with motor and verbal
developmental milestones (see the one page chart from birth to beyond 2 years
of age).
breastfeeding hospital do’s and don’ts (breastfeed at birth, early and
frequent breastfeeding, avoid supplements, room-in etc.)
jaundice
how to assess the adequacy of the maternal milk supply and infant intake.
I developed a patient education program with a series of handouts that can be
accessed through my website (see below). I would require obtaining a
breastfeeding research article either from a select list of older articles list or a
new current article for a group critique session.

I would require attending a breastfeeding workshop with a lactation
consultant in attendance or following a hospital lactation consultant until the
consultant approves their latching skills.

Good luck. Developing and implementing a course such as this would be one of
my dreams come true!
