While a bed sheet may be used in an emergency, it's really not recommended for routine use by any baby wearing educators I know. 

Most areas have a local babywearing group with a lending library. 
If she's unable to secure a carrier that way, osnaburg can be used to make a new sew ring sling or used for a rebozo carry and is available at Walmart and fabric stores for about 2.50 a yard. She'd only need 2-2.5 yards depending on her size.
