Being a late-night person, I actually saw this "myth" confirmed on a TLC show
called Myth Busters. The distilled water did not boil, even when heated to
extremely high temps (It actually began melting the container). However, when
the "hosts" put something in the heated water, it did have a violent reaction. I
don't know that I would call it an explosion....
Maybe you could cruise the TLC website and see if the program will re-air.
