Whereas we in the UK, generally hate, loathe despise and abhor the
entire 'bitty' thing.

It feeds in the cultural prejudice we have here, that is you breastfeed
past about... oh, six days... you will be "sticking your boob through
the school gates." Or "Won't it look odd turning up at University in
order to feed him?" (To which the most effective reply is "Oh no, he'll
got to one near home!")

Although I have to admit, it's somewhat toned down for the USA version.
In the USA one it's "Look what those strange upper class Brits are
doing, and how we should just keep ignoring it." Here, it's more about
the perversion in the family, and is therefore far more damaging to the
viewpoint of normal term nursing. We have other Upper Class Brit
families equally as appalled, so it's very squarely about the inability
to put in boundaries and the perverted relationship between the mother
and son. Including him requiring bitty at his own wedding reception (or
in the Church itself, have blocked out the horror details). It was
introduced as the son bringing his fiancée home to meet mother, and then
he had 'bitty' in front of his fiancée.

I happened to watch the USA one tonight, for the first time, and struck
by how much 'softer' it was.

(Who is equally repelled by Lou and Andy, as my husband is a wheelchair
user and I am the carer of a wheelchair user. But I like some bits of
LB having taught several Vicky Pollards and having been denied access to
the ladies' loo, whilst heavily pregnant and about to burst for the need
to pee, by an Emily "I'm a laydeeee" Howard.)
