Thanks so much for the continued helpful responses. I am learning that approaches to this procedure vary widely and often are mostly depending on professional comfort level, accessibility, and busy schedules. Nonetheless, it seems the procedure can be necessary for so many more reasons than I realized beyond trying to sustain nursing. As I correspond more with the mother here, it turns out the dentist is recommending the procedure to maximize nourishment whether by breast or bottle. Incidentally, this mother's older child who she now realizes has the same labial issue is in 3 percentile for weight. O2 saturation levels would be an even more pressing issue!

Thanks,
Allyson Wessells, PT, LLLL
