Dear Lacnetters
I usually act as a go-between for my LLL leader wife and the
lacnet, but today I have a message of my own.
First, I recently received a question from a colleague at another
teaching institution with regard to nursing mothers who are students in
labs taught at college (though organic chem was specified, it relates to
many different labs). The question raised one for myself, what
recommendation(s) should I give my students who are nursing?
Second, I recently met a Mom who is carrying out experiments of the
minerals/elements of human milk at Fairmont State and referred her to the
lacnet, hopefully she will be able to answer questions as well as ask some
interesting questions of the resources available through the readers of
this list.
Finally, I read with great interest the traffic with respect to
HIV, as a researcher in the field and as a "husband" of the LLL. My
question here is, if the child of the nursing HIV positive mother is found
to be HIV positive, are the benefits of nursing vs. formula negated?
Passive immunity against opportunistic infection via antibodies in the
breast milk may be worth it to continue nursing.

Thanks for your attention
Bob
