Dear all:

I need some help getting referrals for breastfeeding friendly feeding specialists to
evaluate a 15 month old who is "refusing" solids in mom's words.

The baby initially took a few solids such as cereal and fruit when diluted. Recently,
howeover, she started restricting her intake and is now even rejecting the bananas she
initially loved. Her cereal must be very dilute before she will take it. Mom reports
gagging when she tried to force the cereal into her daughter's mouth per the
pediatrician's instructions. Her daughter has only gained 1 ounce in a month.

Her pediatrician told her to wean because her daughter wouldn't take solids if she was
breastfeeding and she wouldn't gain weight. Again, another of my reportable offenses, I
put on my nutritionist hat and explained that the breast milk was a highly valuable source
of nutrient-dense nutrition for her baby and abruptly taking that away might actually
cause a weight loss if her baby was unable to take solids. This fit with mother's
discomfort over abrupt weaning and sense that her daughter really still needed the breast
milk especially because she seemed to have physical difficulty with anything but very
dilute substances.

Mom is moving to Holy Pennsylvania which she says is near Holmesdale and Scranton
and will be switching pediatricians. Anyone know of good breastfeeding friendly feeding
specialists in those areas that won't force this mom to wean early?

Best,

Susan Burger
