Hello,
My name is Michelle, this is my first time posting to the list. I have just
begun assisting breastfeeding moms after completing a year course of
lactation study and hospital rounds.
Recently a mother of a one and a half year old nursing boy came to me very
distraught. Her dentist had just informed her that her son needs his four
top center front teeth removed due to what he called "nursing rot". The
dentist told her that his teeth rotted because she breastfeeds the child on
demand during the night. He quoted the ADA statement discouraging nocturnal
breastfeeding after the first tooth comes in.
Does anybody have any information that I can pass on to this mother, she
feels very guilty about "ruining" her child's teeth and is considering
weaning her child, basing her decision solely on what her dentist told her.
Thank you.
Michelle Eitan
