It costs the same to recertify  by CERPs as to take the exam (fee paid to 
IBLCE).  It would be less  expensive to recertify by exam than by CERPs for the 
IBCLC because (a) you have  to pay for all the CERPs and (b) you have to pay 
the fee to  recertify.
 
Taking the exam for the second  or third time is not difficult.  While I 
would fail my nursing boards in a  heartbeat, I work with breastfeeding anywhere 
from 50 to 75 hours a week when  everything is added together.  Taking a test 
is not hard.  Getting  100% is hard.  Getting 90% is moderately difficult.  
Passing is a  piece 'o cake.  But no one knows your score except you and the 
IBLCE.   Look at the percentage of the retakers who passed over the past few 
years,  and don't be nervous about it.
 
The biggest question is, given  the problems we are seeing -- do you 
recertify or not?
