I always hate to see sore heads on newborns, but if they must have one,
I am happier to see one that is "off center". When the bruise is to one
side (baby's right side for this example), baby should be lying on its
opposite side so the bruise is facing up. This means, in this example,
I would encourage mom to nurse in "football" position on her left breast
and "cross cradle" on her right until the bruising/vacuum mark, etc.
begins to resolve. In some cases, we need to have the baby's doc OK the
use of some liquid Tylenol before feeds. Of course, mom should avoid
touching the tender area if it seems to bother her baby.
There are some babies that seem to latch and nurse great with heads that
make mine hurt to look at them. On the other hand, when they are having
trouble, especially if they whimper at breast or start to nurse, but
pull away fussing after one suck, these positions do seem to help.
Winnie
