I am in quite the situation! For the last year I have ate, drank, and
breathed ways to help get a baby to breast...I am still so green...but now I
need to do the opposite.
I have a mother whose infant is just about 4 months old and mom desperately
needs to find another way to feed this baby. Mom is having major medical
problems, thyroid blood sugars, wt loss, hair loss, etc. They have done MRI,
CT numerous blood work. They want to do some nuclear imaging. Looking in
Hale, the meds they would like to use require at minimum 3 days of pumping
and dumping. Well this mom has fought low milk supply from the beginning and
told me she could not pump, nor would baby take anything but breast. I have
been working with her for almost 3 months for supply issues. Mom has tried
every nipple to be bought here in town, different bottles, different people
feeding her, and numerous different formulas. Finally yesterday I got her in
to do some serious work. Using a Medela Lactina she was able to pump 3
ounces -HOORAY- then I tried to feed EBM in the bottle. No Way! Per mom's
history and my observance this child ADAMANTLY refuses the bottle. Chews,
tongue thrusts, screams and gags. Calmed baby down, tried cup feeding, same
thing! This baby nurses well-finally- but is now doing marathon feedings at
night, even with co-sleeping it is more than mom can take. Mom absolutely
needs to find a way for this child to take EBM from another source than
breast. Birth hx is negative, no intubation, no deep sxn, No reason for
this apparent oral aversion. I have not tried an SNS because I am afraid to
turn baby off breast for good. Luckily we are starting solids. but I am at a
loss what to suggest. Mom's doc is waiting till we resolve the feeding issue
before going ahead with serious testing. Any suggestion!!
TIA
