“I don't know where we ever got the idea that human beings were supposed
to sleep at night. It certainly wasn't an idea popularized by the
mothers I know. :-) Jo-Anne”

In addition to melatonin production being greater during the regular
nighttime sleep cycle and even a protection against breast cancer
(women who are awake and working night shifts have higher rates of
breast cancer), there are other hints regarding humans and the day wake
and night sleep cycle.

This relates to the color of sunsets being a calming effect. Several
years ago, a Navy prison in Bremerton WA painted their holding cell
walls a sunset color named Baker-Miller pink in honor of the officers in
the Navy who consented to this experiment. This particular sunset color
subdued the most violent prisoners by color alone, within 10 minutes no
less.

In contrast, this same color of the sunset is the trigger for nocturnal
animals to awaken and begin their foraging for food at night.
