I looked at this article and here are some of my concerns.
The premise of this article was that peppermint on nipples prevents sore
nipples. So if the peppermint was found to prevent sore nipples how do you
really measure that? With the group of mothers who used peppermint Vs breast
milk and found more relief; I would like to hear from people who are familiar
with this treatment how it works. Does it numb the tissue?
My first concern reading this article is babies associating breastfeeding
with a peppermint flavor. I can see babies refusing to latch unless they can
have this flavor on the nipple.
They discussed potential serious side effects to babies if the peppermint
oil is not correctly mixed. This is just too scary to even think about.
My last concern is that the majority of sore nipples are due to either poor
positioning/latch, or anatomical issues with a baby. Addressing these issues
will correct sore nipples.
Using expressed breast milk would never by a contra-productive action and
would hate to have this study imply that.
Would love to hear from folks who are familiar with this treatment.
