I think there is a fine line between contradicting a health care provider
and providing a mother with more current (and accurate) information, after
all breastfeeding is an art as well as a science and there is new
information all the time. I can think of lots of "bad" information I have
given mothers that we thought was accurate at the time it was given, we
don't have to tell a mother her doctor is wrong, just offer her some
evidence based information published in a peer reviewed scientific journal
and let her decide for herself. There are some good phrases that can be
used, like "current research suggests...", "the AAP recommends...", "the
XYZ journal reports..." etc. We can also share our personal experience, "In
my experience..." or "many mothers have found..." and also our
observations, "I see there is milk coming out of your baby's nose, that may
be a sign of a cleft palate, I'd suggest you return to your health care
provider for a more thorough exam." Remember, our interpretation of the
mother's perception of what she was told may or may not be correct. We need
to find positive ways to correct misinformation without criticizing the
purveyor. Cathy Liles
