I was involved in a similar situation recently. Thehospital I work at
recently had a public relations event to celebrate the new year/ first baby
etc. One of the gifts that was listed , in the newspaper article was the year
of free formula. I was quite disappointed to see this especially in print to
the community after working so hard on our breastfeeding program for so long.
I called public relations and spoke to the head of dept. I was told that I
was being ridiculous and that this would not dissuade BFing mothers and she
doesn't have to use it if she doesn't want to yada yada yada. When offering
to send her research I was told not to bother. To make a long story short I
decided to send an informative letter outlining my disappointment in this
situation and included research, the AAP statement and NYS Dept of Health
guidelines to our CEO. He was very receptive , wrote me a letter apologizing
that this was an unfortunate and that in the future public relations will
have to contact a clinical specialist before advertising or planning an
event. A small step but at least he responded positively and spoke to public
relations who basically shut me down!
